A draught constitution was presented stating that memebership would be restricted to 40 and that only retired males would be eligible. Subscriptions would be £5 per annum. Those present agreed that there would be a future foe a club and it was determined that a meeting would be held on every second Tuesday of each month and that has happened, except for heavy snowfalls, since 2001. It was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Towcester with a committee of three, John Kimber ( who became Founder President), Bob Marchant and Ron Smith. By the December meeting, the club had 40 members and a "waiting list" was created.
Some two years later, John Kimber became secretary and with the sale of Peggotty's, the club moved to the Saracen's Head Hotel and the additional space encouraged the membership to agree to an increase in numbers and this went up to 50, still leaving a waiting list. Subsequently, after much discussion between the members, it was decided that the absolute maximum number of members would increase to 60 and that there would be no further improvement on this even though there are still individuals waiting.
The structure of the club is akin to that of Rotary although there are no committees and no national or international controlling bodies, hence the low subscription fee which has remained the same since 2001. A national directory is published which indicates that there are over 2,000 clubs in the UK including over 300 ladies clubs.
The club places no committment on its members other than to attend as regularly as possible which means an average attendance at the monthly meetings of 48. A variety of interesting speakers have been used and several visits to different venues have taken place. A table plan is produced every month so that members are encouraged to get to know their fellows. During June, a Summer Lunch is held at Whittlebury Park when partners are invited.
The Probus Club of Towcester has been, and still is, an outstanding success which in part can be attributed to the Rotary Club, several of whom are also members of Probus.
