Back at Whittlebury Hall Hotel for the second year running with their version of “The Last Night at the Proms”, Kidlington Concert Brass and Sponne School Musicians and Choir were excellent!
Lead by Conductor Catherine Underwood, (a Deputy Head Teacher at Sponne School), the musicians and choir performed a number of arrangements including many of the old favourites both classical and modern. Audience participation was evident throughout much of the evening with an enthusiastic response to both Fantasia on British Sea Songs and Jerusalem. The Sponne Senior Choir took the audience back to the days of ABBA with Dancing Queen and delighted with their version of Sitting on the Dock of the Bay. There was even something for those who enjoy the swirl of the pipes as Sponnes’ own piper Callum Beck provided an up beat solo to the 79th Farewell to Gibraltar. Really impressive stuff! No Proms night would be complete without a rendering of Rule Britannia and so it was. Filled with enthusiastic gusto the audience gave their best and the hotel corridors echoed with the all time favourite.
Patriotic dress was evident amongst the evening dress adding to the ambience of the evening. This year the Rotary Club and Sponne School were pleased to welcome a number of “VIPs” to the performance, evidence that the popularity of the event is extending beyond Towcester.
The profit from tickets, the raffle, (organised by Sponne School PFA), sponsorship and donations will be shared equally between Sponne School and Towcester Rotary Club who will apply their portion to a range of humanitarian causes.
