The local Riding for the Disabled charity (RDA) based at Silverstone Business Park, was delighted to receive a cheque for £500 from the Rotary Club of Towcester this week.
The facilities at Shacks Barn Farm are fabulous – with both indoor and outdoor areas where the riders can exercise their horses and practice their skills.
Says Steve Harding – new President of the Rotary Club of Towcester, “The £500 that we have donated will be used specifically to pay towards the holiday at Special Riding Centre in Clywd – north Wales – where the riders (and parents) go for a week’s break in the summer. Each rider is given a horse for the week that they are able to ride, but must also groom, muck-out and keep the tackle clean. It is a fabulous experience and also allows these young children/adults to learn life skills that may stand then in good stead in the future”.
The RDA at Shacks Barn Farm (just off the A43 at Wood Burcote) has disabled children who start to ride as early as age three! and many continue there until they are adults. As well as riding, they learn skills on the horse eg. how to post a letter from a horse’s back– and some even do vaulting (which involves the use of equipment as well as the horse to improve balance, co-ordination and team work). As most of these riders cannot take part in normal sporting activities at mainstream schools, this facility gives them an opportunity to be part of a sport, to gain a real sense of achievement, to be part of a family and of course to express their love of horses.
RDA is funded totally by donations. Some of the horses are owned by RDA, but some are donated and some are loaned on a weekly basis so that there is always a pool of steady, dependable horses for the disabled children to use.
